Kingdom of the Sharifs in Pakistan – Do You Agree?

Posted by yourpakistan on July 24, 2014

Prime Minister Pakistan Nawaz Sharif His Highness

By Sabena Siddiqui – Opinion Maker

Pakistan has begun to look like a kingdom of the Sharifs , where family members are like royalty and are entrusted with the administration of various areas sans qualifications or experience. Living in Saudi Arabia for an extended time has left some imprint of the royals on the Sharif mind and they assume everything they do is right. Promises made at the time of the election campaign are long forgotten and the main concentration is on attaining as many luxuries as possible.

Their election victory is quite controversial to begin with , a parties-demanded Election Commission probe recently found vote fraud favouring Nawaz Sharif , and some politicians demanded that he must resign from his position of prime minister.

An ECP official said a typing mistake had increased the count by 7,000 more votes. Meanwhile, the controversy got worse as it also revealed vote fraud favouring Nawaz Sharif in his winning constituency. If this is what happened in the Prime Minister’s own constituency and he won by rigging , what would have happened in other constituencies.

What has been achieved in these 14 months? The ground realities of the last 14 months are an absolute contrast to the favorable impression given by improvement in the ranking of Pakistan by Moody’s. It is not easy to wait another 4 years for the turnaround of the country under PMLN’s rule. There is hardly any change in the power load shedding situation if you compare the PPP and the PMLN government. The same amount of electricity is being provided but at 100% increased rates. What makes it even worse than the PPP era is that the power is supplied at as low as 170 volts, in PMLN’s time . A lot of unwarranted extravagance has taken place on purchases of latest model BMW’s, costly foreign tours, purchase of expensive dogs, free five-star meals being served to their parliamentarians in the National Assembly cafeteria. There is a total disconnect between the ruling elite and the general public. Read the rest of this entry »

Pakistan in Search of New Life

“Pakistan needs a leadership that can rise above all schisms and think out of the box with honesty and dedication; such people are there but only need to be put in place.” Raja Mujtaba

Pakistan Is Our Passion

By Mahboob A. Khawaja, PhD – Opinion Maker

After the scheduled retirement of daily newsmaker Chief Justice Iftikhar Ahmed Chaudry, another favorite General is sworn-in to replace General Ashfaq Kiyani – the outgoing Army Chief and expiry of Asif Zardari’s fraudulent presidency, the intriguing news stunts appear to have subsided.  Nothing has changed over the years except Pakistan is floating in a bubble of political, social, economic and strategic entanglement and it is just a matter of time that foreign masters could undermine its flight without notice. Pakistanis are camouflaged into a world of fantasy and dream that crime-riddled corrupt politics of the few could rescue them from catastrophic consequences unthinkable to conventional wisdom at the present. Being a nuclear power in a highly competitive world of power politics is often a problem than a sustainable strength. It is not the power of nuclear weapons to be a decisive factor, but morally and intellectually enriched intelligent leadership to define the national interests effectively and to assume a powerful role of persuasive motivation and influence to gain favorable standing in global affairs. Pakistan is at great loss with nothing of that sort. Over half of century or more, Pakistanis failed to produce any intelligent and credible leaders to represent its national interests to a challenging world of competing interests. For too long, Pakistan’s national interests were not part of the political characters encroaching political power through backdoor conspiracies and secretive intrigues to maintain the status-quo for foreign dictates.  There are critical issues involving large segments of the society and politicians to be complacent in sustaining institutionalized corruption and dismantling the foundation framework of the freedom of the nation. There is no scarcity of informed, well educated and intelligent people to take up the challenging role of new-age leadership to change the course of self-geared destruction of the society but most are not part of the corrupt “no system” of politics as they have not earned wealth through bribes and backdoor deals, so their chances to any meaningful participation in national politics are non-existent. The institutionalized corruption is itself an operating powerful system of governance and it denies receptive opportunities to outsiders – the honest and educated people of the new generation to enter into politics and make the difference.  Money is a big motivator and hand-changer like the mafia of the feudal landlords and boxed-in family-based politicians of the few. None would feel the pinch if Pakistan is dismembered again and all that was precious and noble core values to its freedom fighters from the British colonial rule.

John Perkins (Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, 2005) knows too well how international economic development projects are planned and carried out by the World Bank and other international corporations affiliated to this paradigm. Pakistan is no exception as it owes some $70 Billions un-payable debt to the International Monetary Fund managed by the US. The mafia-like game works like this explains Charley Reese……….. Roshan Pakistan in Dingy Parliament

Posted by yourpakistan on June 10, 2013

National Assembly of Pakistan

Democracy has finally yielded its fruit, and the fruit was only ‘more democracy’; the same people who sat in this prestigious house in the last term, sit there today – only the seats and rows have been shuffled within. Those who were a friendly opposition yesterday, now vow to form a friendly government, and those who were governing yesterday are ready to return friendship with yet more loyalty. More promises, more slogans, and a potpourri of massive rigging and horse-trading, have eventually managed to not let democracy derail. Nothing has been compromised in assuring the establishment of power – except trust, nobility, dignity, law and other useless stuff like these.

Today, when we see representatives of different parties giving their opening statements – vowing upon the Constitution, and reminding each other that the pages of the Constitution are dipped in the context of the Quran to the roots, promulgating their earnest intention to uphold it this time, we are amazed! We are reminded, by this oath, of another oath, taken several centuries ago, by 11 brothers, who connived to kill their 12th brother, and promised each other that after getting rid of Yousuf they would become of the righteous. But history tells us that what is begotten upon falsehood does not yield seeds of goodness, and the sin of avarice keeps on regenerating at every moist spot. Therefore, a democracy that has been seized with cheatings, double-play and deception, does not stand on any firm ground whatsoever.

The same people we have been cursing for the last 5 years – for the load-shedding, for the price-hikes and for drones; the same people who were unable to reconstruct our badly performing education system, our deteriorating socio-religious norms, our overly corrupt offices; and the same people who have allowed the cultural onslaught of the Indian and Western media and who have allowed the propagation of a pseudo-historical narrative, are back in power, with new smiles on their old, worn faces. Pirate Ship

Posted by yourpakistan on June 4, 2013

Pirate Ship

By Humayun Gauhar – Opinion Maker

Though Pakistan is being buffeted by wind and wave and caught in an impending Perfect Triple Storm, the worst thing to be is pessimistic. Those with Faith never lose hope, knowing that God knows best. Descending into hopelessness makes crashing onto rocks and icebergs inevitable.

Conversely, over-optimism based on nothing but wishful thinking is equally dangerous. Get realistic and base your analysis on facts good and bad. Start thinking for God’s sake. Take superficial media and social gossip with a pinch of salt. Think for yourself and think things through, putting your illusions, delusions, wish lists and prejudices aside.

If it helps, remember that the fundamentals of the US, UK and Japanese economies are even worse than ours. Where they are better is less bad leadership. But if their economic decline continues, centrifugal forces in the first two will arise too. After all man, not nature makes states if man thinks that under this particular dispensation his lot will improve. When it stops improving the justification for the existence of the state evaporates and it collapses to morph into other state or states or merge with other existing ones. Skeptical? Remember the Soviet Union and East Europe?

We are not a rudderless ship without a steering wheel. Our problem is that our rudder is alien and thus doesn’t work for our ship. It only works for its owners and top managers who are all pirates so such a ship suits them just fine. The hapless passengers keep sacking and reemploying the helmsmen regularly in a zero sum game, not realizing that they come from the pirates who have hijacked their ship of state. But now the question arises: are pirates good enough to steer and navigate the ship out of this Triple Storm and to where? The pirates’ destination is different, passengers’ different. The pirates are products of the same nursery of colonized minds that are intent on protecting and fortifying the man-eating iniquitous status quo that kills the passengers but enriches the owners. PakNationalists – Nawaz Sharif’s Pro-India And Anti-Pakistan Positions

Posted by yourpakistan on May 11, 2013

Nawaz Sharif

No Word On Indian Terrorism in Samjota Express attack, the Indian propaganda, and full support to Indian positions on Mumbai and Kargil.

ANSAR ABBASI | The News International

PML-N chief and the generally anticipated next elected prime minister Mian Nawaz Sharif’s recent statements on Kargil and Mumbai incidents have raised many eyebrows and are seen as crossing the red lines.

In his bid to appease India or vent his pent up anger on the military establishment, days before the May 11 elections, Mian Nawaz Sharif have gone to the extent of committing that if he returns to power he would share the reports of commissions on Kargil and Mumbai incidents with New Delhi.

Like his other leading competitors including the PTI and the PPP, Nawaz however did not touch the issue of Kashmir in his election campaign or in his media interviews. Instead, Sharif who has served as the prime minister of Pakistan twice, promised to share with India his government’s findings on Kargil and Mumbai attacks.

He also did not utter a word about Samjhota express massacre of Pakistanis; the latest heroic handling of the Indian government and its ruling Congress party of the dead body of condemned terrorist and killer of 14 Pakistanis – Sarabjit Singh; the tit-for-tat murder of Sanaullah, a Pakistani prisoner in Indian jail; the recent matrydom of some Pakistani soldiers by Indian troops etc.  Read the rest of this entry »

Pakistan: Politicians Stand Exposed

Posted by yourpakistan on April 24, 2013

Pakistan Corrupt Politicians

Handlers of democracy are corrupt to the core

By Brig Asif Haroon Raja – Opinion Maker

Notwithstanding the long list of failings of political and military regimes, there were good points to brag about as well. It is unfortunate that the last coalition government had nothing to show and feel proud of. The period from March 2008 to March 16, 2013 will be remembered as the darkest periods of Pakistan’s chequered history. The last government is busy highlighting its so-called achievements through page-size ads in newspapers. It is however quiet on its loot and plunder which continued till its last day in power. As if five years of loot was insufficient to rob this poor nation, the outgoing looters passed laws authorizing the PM, Speaker National Assembly, Chairman Senate, Sindh Chief Minister and Speaker lifetime security and perks and privileges.

On the last day of its tenure, the outgoing government issued 70 CNG licenses; Speaker Fehmida approved 100% increase in benefits and allowances of all members of National Assembly; income of Speaker, Deputy Speaker, ministers and special assistants increased by 40%; entire staff of Ministry of Information given foreign postings; billions of rupees dished out and banks remained open to ensure transaction. It gives a glimpse of the lust and greed of parasitic rulers. Read the rest of this entry »

The Tahir ul Qadri Experiment

Posted by yourpakistan on January 7, 2013

Tahir-ul-Qadri

PKKH Editorial

It is not wrong to say that Pakistan has been the most eventful theater of all sorts of political dynamics for several years; home to 4 Long-Marches and more in the making; where huge political rallies, both by the government and against it, are almost weekly events; where the world saw the largest and the most numerous anti-blasphemy protests. Where members of the parliament are often seen changing loyalties and where re-grouping is the vogue of the day. It seems, to the common observer, as if all those who hold the offices of the highest trust of their people, are the most un-trustworthy, befuddled in the bedlam of vested interests. For the common man there is no trust, no belief, skepticism fills the air and the air of collective conscience is becoming so heavy that the nation has come on the brink of nauseating.

Perhaps the reasons for such intense induced-chaos in Pakistan’s politics are as various as the many stake-holders in her politics, spread wide and deep around the world. Many times the country has seen its leaders imported from abroad and all the time some of the most patent of its politicians are stationed abroad. Like they say ‘it takes two to tango’, the lowly weakness of our leaders, who consider politics to be a means of making magnanimous rackets and nothing else, who lack broader vision and despise it, invite with full heart interference and mentorships of foreign entities.  Read the rest of this entry »

Pakistan and Elections in 2013

Posted by yourpakistan on December 8, 2012

There isn’t to reason why?

There’s but to do or die

By Brig Samson S Sharaf

Pakistan Major Political King Maker

As the tenure of the present NRO sponsored regimes come to a close, political parties in Pakistan are gearing up for elections. The parties that ruled the country in one capacity or the other during the past five years appear self-absolved of their pathetic performance in all fields. The audacity to feed the people with a faulty narrative and secure votes based on traditional heavyweights, feudalism

and narrow ethno-nationalism with a total absence of remorse or contrition is a razor’s edge that people of Pakistan will have to walk to exercise right choices. In facilitating the people to make the right choices, the anti status quo parties will have to embark on a revolutionary and out of the box themes to educate the masses on the perils of a daylight robbery perpetuated in the past five years and why it must be halted in its tracks.

The hyperactive media in its present capacity and ability to influence minds will have to play a positive role and educate the people in exercising their right of vote. More than ever, the media in the election campaign 2013 will be remembered for the role it played in changing Pakistan or otherwise. Within the run up to these elections, currents, counter currents and international compulsions will cast their shadows on the outcome and must be factorised. As ever, the propensity to engineer results will remain endemic.

Two major issues relating to the economy of Pakistan and the US withdrawal from Afghanistan will be the main determinants of Pakistan’s future power structure. Both have an effect on the quality of life and Pakistan’s future. A self reliant and proud Pakistan; or, a pliable, dependent and discredited country of thugs and thieves, ready to sell their mothers? Read the rest of this entry »

Three Cases, Eight Generals But What About Army Martyrs And Heroes?

Posted by yourpakistan on November 7, 2012

By Farrukh Saleem

Pakistan Army has 2 generals, 22 lieutenant-generals and close to 150 major-generals. As a matter of fact, the generals are a mere 0.03 percent of the institution we call the Pakistan Army.

To be certain, the non-general component of the Pakistan Army is 99.97 percent of the institution we call the Pakistan Army.Over the past 16 years, back when Air Marshal Asghar Khan filed his petition, more than 2 million Pakistanis must have served Pakistan by serving in our army. Out of the 2 million, fingers are now being pointed-rightly or wrongly-at 1 general, 5 lieutenant generals and 2 major generals accusing them of having their fingers in the money till.  A total of 8 generals out of 2 million comes to 0.0004 percent. Of the 8, Gen Mirza Aslam Beg (retd) and Lt-Gen Asad Durrani (retd) accept that they distributed funds among politicians.

Pakistan in Search of Future

Posted by yourpakistan on October 25, 2012

By Mahboob A. Khawaja, PhD.

History cannot be replicated by superficial images and video sounds as a reality factor that happened in the past. Thinkers, philosophers, political visionaries, common folks, poets, artists, and so many others activists who were committed to their sublime aims and ambitions in life and enriched a specific time span. Faith, Unity and Discipline were the lifeline characteristics of the Pakistan freedom movement more than six decades earlier. All movements indoctrinate people to a sense of unity and equality for its aims and purposes that nothing else can or will establish a coherent relationship between the aims of the movement and its pursuit until accomplished. It was not haphazard but intellectually, morally and politically an organized scheme of things to define the Pakistan movement that “there is no god but Allah and Mohammad is the Messenger of Allah.” It embodied knowledge, proactive vision, wisdom and consistent principles of human intellectual pursuit to achieve the aims of the movement.

Today’s Pakistan and its physical body, leadership and political systems and culture point out a sharp disconnect with its past – the Pakistan movement and its ultimate goals for national freedom and the unity of purpose.

The challenges common Pakistanis face today are the result of the wrong people, wrong thinking and wrong actions. But the Pakistan freedom movement had two major challenges: (1) the illegal British Raj and military occupation of Muslim India and the implications of racial superiority of the British rule by destroying Muslim culture and civilization; and (2) overwhelming domination of Hindus in business, trade, politics and collaboration with the British to support the colonization to gain a Hindu dominated India. None of these historical factors are reviewed by Pakistanis for change and reformation of the contemporary affairs. Whereas, comparatively, India has pursued planned change and achieved progress to become a leading industrial and cultural hub center of Asia. It should be important to note that military Generals in India remained out of the political scope and dictatorial governance enabling the Indian politics and policy making to enrich its capacity for future-building. The same has unfolded a dark chapter for Pakistan by military interventions and martial laws to incapacitate the nation and its thinking- intellectual powers for change and development. No sensible person or businessmen invests in a society dominated or controlled by military dictators. Read the rest of this entry »
