Kingdom of the Sharifs in Pakistan – Do You Agree?

Prime Minister Pakistan Nawaz Sharif His Highness

By Sabena Siddiqui – Opinion Maker

Pakistan has begun to look like a kingdom of the Sharifs , where family members are like royalty and are entrusted with the administration of various areas sans qualifications or experience. Living in Saudi Arabia for an extended time has left some imprint of the royals on the Sharif mind and they assume everything they do is right. Promises made at the time of the election campaign are long forgotten and the main concentration is on attaining as many luxuries as possible.

Their election victory is quite controversial to begin with , a parties-demanded Election Commission probe recently found vote fraud favouring Nawaz Sharif , and some politicians demanded that he must resign from his position of prime minister.

An ECP official said a typing mistake had increased the count by 7,000 more votes. Meanwhile, the controversy got worse as it also revealed vote fraud favouring Nawaz Sharif in his winning constituency. If this is what happened in the Prime Minister’s own constituency and he won by rigging , what would have happened in other constituencies.

What has been achieved in these 14 months? The ground realities of the last 14 months are an absolute contrast to the favorable impression given by improvement in the ranking of Pakistan by Moody’s. It is not easy to wait another 4 years for the turnaround of the country under PMLN’s rule. There is hardly any change in the power load shedding situation if you compare the PPP and the PMLN government. The same amount of electricity is being provided but at 100% increased rates. What makes it even worse than the PPP era is that the power is supplied at as low as 170 volts, in PMLN’s time . A lot of unwarranted extravagance has taken place on purchases of latest model BMW’s, costly foreign tours, purchase of expensive dogs, free five-star meals being served to their parliamentarians in the National Assembly cafeteria. There is a total disconnect between the ruling elite and the general public. Read the rest of this entry »

ISIS: A Geopolitical Game Changer?

Posted by yourpakistan on July 17, 2014

ISIS

Introduction – Confused Narratives:

Much has been discussed; theories, conspiracy theories, notions and narratives about a drastic geo political change in the Middle East in the last few weeks, with the rise of ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) also now known as IS (Islamic State).

Though the organization is famous for changing its name in the past, along with its stated aims; this time the uprising in Iraq and Syria by IS took many by surprise. Apparently, based on the age-old Islamic internal rift between Shi’ites and Sunnis, the conflict scenario created by IS is much more than what meets the eye. Analysts are baffled, coming up with theories of drawing parallels about their activities and advancements along with those of Taliban Movement of the 90s in Afghanistan, others trying to find a hand of CIA and US security apparatus in the movement and a third narrative about a covert support by neighboring countries like Saudi Arabia is also on the table.

What so ever is the case, one thing is for sure, that the military advancements of ISIS werenot possible in absence of a secret intel apparatus that would have penetrated deep into its ranks, guiding or providing assistance in military strategies to the top tier of ISIS. With the unfolding events, perhaps a clearer picture of this saga will come forth for analysts to build a more concrete narrative about ISIS’ background and its support. Perhaps then, a clearer picture may emerge on the canvas for strategists’ to assess the situation for drawing down the results of ISIS’ assaults and advancements on Maliki govt. and its allies in Iraq and Syria. Nexus Among Terror Mongers

Posted by yourpakistan on July 11, 2014

Terrorism in Pakistan is International Agenda

By Qudsia Farhat – Opinion Maker

The milieu in Pakistan presents happy hunting grounds for terror mongers of various ilks. They find it prudent to have a happy nexus to achieve their heinous agenda of destabilizing the state of Pakistan at the behest of their foreign masters. The various components of this unholy nexus are the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), Baloch Sub Nationals (BSNs) and other terrorist organizations’ with one odious aim: weaken Pakistan and bring it to its knees at the bidding its foreign mentors.

Even a cursory glance at recent events points towards this machination. The carnage, which resulted in the massacre of innocent Shia pilgrims in Balochistan, the attack on Karachi airport and suicidal attack on Security Forces at Boya; all within a span of 24 hours proves the fact that TTP, LeJ, BSNs and other banned terrorists outfits have an unholy alliance with a single aim to subvert Pakistan. Like puppets on a string, the nexus is manipulated to come into action and their sleeper cells are activated to strike at targets of opportunity. Their abhorrent agenda is one: create chaos and mayhem, cause enough bloodshed to traumatize the people, expose the weaknesses in the law enforcing agencies’ capacity and capability to defend their assigned vulnerable points and reduce the confidence of the masses in their leadership.

All these detestable tasks are to reduce Pakistan to ashes. Their foreign masters synchronized these cowardly acts in darkness to hurt Pakistan domestically, regionally and internationally. Take the attack on Karachi airport and the firing on an international airlines aircraft in Peshawar. Both have caused the international airlines to reconsider operating through Pakistani airports. Gradually various airlines have terminated their operations to and from Pakistani airfields, completing the isolation of the war ravaged country. The 2009 atrocious attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team at Lahore has already removed Pakistan from the sporting map of the world. Foreign teams are reluctant to engage in sports fixtures staged on Pakistani grounds and stadiums. As a result Pakistani standards of sports has deteriorated, being deprived of opportunities to test their mettle with foreign teams on home ground. Pakistan’s sports industry has suffered badly and the people have been shun of the opportunity to witness sports tournaments on home ground, adding to their frustration and sense of deprivation.
