Pakistan State Owned Enterprises Privatization Hidden Agenda
Exposing A Critical Danger to the Country’s Survival

Those who praise Thatcher’s massive privatization of Britain’s state-owned enterprises do not know the real story. She in fact wrecked the sound structure of Britain’s economy that was a fruitful mix of socialism and capitalism. She “enabled Britain’s rich to get richer, but made life hell for many working-class Brits.” It was some years later when independence for Scotland loomed on the political scene as a reality that the hidden political aim behind Thatcher’s policies dawned on the British people.
New Wave of Pressure. Pressure on Pakistan to privatize its state-owned enterprises is again increasing. This is not to say that there was any lapse in it. This pressure is a constant feature that is evident from its recurring mention in the media. Its heat, of course, is felt without let up by government officials, especially those in the Foreign Office and the Economic Affairs Division. But then, there are among them those who are part of the pressure machine.
Bhutto’s Nationalization – Part of the Plan. The pressure stems from the IMF-World Bank Duo, which demands that Pakistan sell off all its State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to private companies. The demand, actually the second part of a long-term plan, was initiated in early 1980s. Its first part was Z.A. Bhutto’s sweeping nationalization of all privately-owned enterprises in the country in 1972–that damaged both the economy and the economic structure of the country. Read the rest of this entry »

After deposing Taliban regime and occupying Afghanistan, the US and its strategic partners embarked upon a covert war to disable Pakistan’s nuclear program but kept giving signals of friendship. Total freedom of action enjoyed by the US intelligence agencies and officials in Pakistan enabled the US to embroil Pak security forces in FATA and Balochistan, penetrate all the departments, establish CIA network and gather vital information about Pakistan’s nuclear program. By the time Musharraf and the US protégé Shaukat Aziz left the scene, the US had gained sufficient control over Pakistan’s foreign, defence, economic and political policies.
By installing NRO cleansed regime in March 2008, Asif Ali Zardari as all-powerful president in August 2008, a dummy parliament under mumbling Syed Gilani and later on under corrupt Raja Rental, appointing America’s chosen men Hussein Haqqani as Ambassador in Washington, Maj Gen retired Mahmood Durrani as defence adviser, Rahman Malik as interior minister and Wajidul Shams as Chief Commissioner in London and with strings in the hands of Negroponte and Richard Boucher, a stage had been set to put Pakistan on sale and denude Pakistan of its integrity, sovereignty and dignity. Each member of the parliament and their cronies wanted to earn as much of ill-gotten wealth in five years of rule. The gang of looters started plundering the nation from the day one and continued to suck the blood of 180 million people gluttonously till the last day of their rule. Every penny was scrounged and Pakistan put under a mountain of debt. Day to day state expenditure was met by printing currency notes.
The top leaders bestowed upon themselves lifelong perks and privileges by issuing last minute executive orders. In order to restrain the proactive judiciary from convicting them and their cronies, the rulers defied rule of law and directives of higher judiciary and defanged the prosecuting and anti-corruption agencies. NAB, FIA, AG and law minister/secretary were mandated to protect the crooks and criminals making money for the rulers at all cost. Wherever required, convicted persons were given presidential pardon and were further rewarded. Such shameful acts were justified under the concept of reconciliation the benefits of which were confined to the selected few only. Read the rest of this entry »

The murderer of the slain FIA prosecutor – Chaudhary Zulfiqar Ali, has been arrested from Islamabad, according to police sources.
Mr. Zulfiqar Ali was investigating the murder of Mrs. Benazir Bhutto, the former PM of Pakistan. He was also involved in the investigations of the 2008 Mumbai attacks in which 166 people were killed. The deceased was shot down in Islamabad on 3rd May. In the ensuing response by his bodyguard, one of the attackers got injured.
The injured attacker has been identified as Abdullah Omar, the son of an army colonel who was court martial after his ties with Al-Qaida were discovered.
“Abdullah Omar was part of the team that ambushed Chaudhary Zulfiqar near his residence in Islamabad on 3rd May,” senior police officer, Jamil Hashmi, told the correspondent of a media outlet.
Some media reports have also highlighted Abdullah’s involvement in an attack on Parade Lane Mosque, frequented by army officers, in 2009.
Reportedly, Mr. Abdullah is hospitalized in a critical condition, as the gun shot penetrated his lower spine. Police officials have designated his hospital room as a ‘sub jail’ while he is undergoing treatment. Read the rest of this entry »

The historical residence of the Quaid-e-Azam, in Ziarat, was attacked by militants last night. Reportedly, 4 militants from the BLA (Balochistan Liberation Army) arrived on two motorcycles. They were also chanting anti-state slogans. They entered the compound and lobbed hand grenades. This resulted in massive damage to the furniture and pictures, and completely destroyed all the historical valuables. Memorial chairs, beds, and historic photographs were burnt to the ground in the resulting fire.
According to the police, “All the old memorials inside the residency have been destroyed.”
In this attack, one policeman, who rushed to the scene upon hearing the blasts, was also killed. Six more bombs, discovered from the site by the bomb disposal squad, were also reported to be subsequently defused. The militants, on the other hand, left without a scratch, before any proper security could be recruited to the crime scene.
Ziarat is a tourist spot, in a region plagued with insurgents. A large number of people visit the town & Quaid memorials in the summer. Ironically, the extreme lack of security resulted in greater damage to this significant site. There were absolutely no guards deployed to protect the valuables within the residency.
In the wake of the current chaotic situation, this attack could be taken as a symbolic one, against the founding father’s residence. It proves that the terrorists in Baluchistan are fighting against the very idea of the ‘state’. The suspects are reported to be from the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). BLA is a separatist militant group, based in Balochistan, headed by Hirbyar Marri. Read the rest of this entry »

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Monday said leaders of the PML-N had started disappointing masses through their statements. “Masses have voted the PML-N to power to lessen their difficulties and not to take note of their fictional statements which are adding to the disappointment,” it said.
PEW President Dr Murtaza Mughal said Ddjected and highly demoralized masses deserved to see a difference between the incumbent and the former corrupt rulers. He said some recent statements regarding load shedding and energy crisis indicated that the federal ministers were speaking the language of the powerful lobbies that might have financed their election campaigns.
Mughal said one of the federal ministers had targeted the CNG sector, levelling allegations of theft against it while conveniently ignoring influential sectors responsible for annual theft of around Rs 250 billion of electricity and natural gas.
Majority of CNG stations involved in theft of natural gas are owned by PML-N and PPP leaders. Some influential owners of CNG outlets will never pay gas bills amounting to millions of rupees but would enjoy uninterrupted gas supply even during the load shedding. Read the rest of this entry »

Democracy has finally yielded its fruit, and the fruit was only ‘more democracy’; the same people who sat in this prestigious house in the last term, sit there today – only the seats and rows have been shuffled within. Those who were a friendly opposition yesterday, now vow to form a friendly government, and those who were governing yesterday are ready to return friendship with yet more loyalty. More promises, more slogans, and a potpourri of massive rigging and horse-trading, have eventually managed to not let democracy derail. Nothing has been compromised in assuring the establishment of power – except trust, nobility, dignity, law and other useless stuff like these.
Today, when we see representatives of different parties giving their opening statements – vowing upon the Constitution, and reminding each other that the pages of the Constitution are dipped in the context of the Quran to the roots, promulgating their earnest intention to uphold it this time, we are amazed! We are reminded, by this oath, of another oath, taken several centuries ago, by 11 brothers, who connived to kill their 12th brother, and promised each other that after getting rid of Yousuf they would become of the righteous. But history tells us that what is begotten upon falsehood does not yield seeds of goodness, and the sin of avarice keeps on regenerating at every moist spot. Therefore, a democracy that has been seized with cheatings, double-play and deception, does not stand on any firm ground whatsoever.
The same people we have been cursing for the last 5 years – for the load-shedding, for the price-hikes and for drones; the same people who were unable to reconstruct our badly performing education system, our deteriorating socio-religious norms, our overly corrupt offices; and the same people who have allowed the cultural onslaught of the Indian and Western media and who have allowed the propagation of a pseudo-historical narrative, are back in power, with new smiles on their old, worn faces. Though Pakistan is being buffeted by wind and wave and caught in an impending Perfect Triple Storm, the worst thing to be is pessimistic. Those with Faith never lose hope, knowing that God knows best. Descending into hopelessness makes crashing onto rocks and icebergs inevitable.
Conversely, over-optimism based on nothing but wishful thinking is equally dangerous. Get realistic and base your analysis on facts good and bad. Start thinking for God’s sake. Take superficial media and social gossip with a pinch of salt. Think for yourself and think things through, putting your illusions, delusions, wish lists and prejudices aside.
If it helps, remember that the fundamentals of the US, UK and Japanese economies are even worse than ours. Where they are better is less bad leadership. But if their economic decline continues, centrifugal forces in the first two will arise too. After all man, not nature makes states if man thinks that under this particular dispensation his lot will improve. When it stops improving the justification for the existence of the state evaporates and it collapses to morph into other state or states or merge with other existing ones. Skeptical? Remember the Soviet Union and East Europe?
We are not a rudderless ship without a steering wheel. Our problem is that our rudder is alien and thus doesn’t work for our ship. It only works for its owners and top managers who are all pirates so such a ship suits them just fine. The hapless passengers keep sacking and reemploying the helmsmen regularly in a zero sum game, not realizing that they come from the pirates who have hijacked their ship of state. But now the question arises: are pirates good enough to steer and navigate the ship out of this Triple Storm and to where? The pirates’ destination is different, passengers’ different. The pirates are products of the same nursery of colonized minds that are intent on protecting and fortifying the man-eating iniquitous status quo that kills the passengers but enriches the owners.
