US Targeting Me For Opposing NATO: Hafiz Saeed

Posted by yourpakistan on April 4, 2012

Jama’at-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, accused by India of masterminding the 2008 Mumbai attacks and for whom the US has announced a bounty of $10 million, said Tuesday this was because he had opposing the re-opening of NATO supply lines to Afghanistan, a media report said.

Saeed told the Al Jazeera TV channel the US move had come as he had been organising rallies against the re-opening of supply lines to NATO forces in Afghanistan. Hundreds of thousands of Pakistanis have rallied under the flag of Saeed’s organisation to voice their support to the armed forces, and to protest against the government’s plans of re-opening the supply route.

Airstrikes last November 26 on two Pakistani Army checkposts in the Mohmand Agency in the northwest had killed two dozen soldiers, sparking outrage in Pakistan.

Pakistan army promptly barred the passage of NATO supplies through the country and decided to boycott an international conference focussed on the future course of action in Afghanistan. It also told the US to vacate the key Shamsi airbase that was used to launch drone attacks.

The US on Monday announced an award of up to $10 million for information leading to arrest and conviction of Saeed and $2 million for Hafiz Adbul Rahman Makki, under the Rewards for Justice programme. Hafiz Saeed has been cleared twice by courts in Pakistan of involvement in the attacks due to lack of evidence.
